SL Second Life Zones
There is a thing in second life called Traffic or Dwell. This is basically a way of rating the most popular venues in the Second Life universe. Residents who own land can earn dwell for being the most visited places in SL.
The process is actually simple: The more residents who spend time on the land you own, the higher your dwell rating goes. Usually, the most popular places in second life are unique attractions meaning places that are exquisitely and uniquely designed. Dwell is best accumulated by designing entertaining places for other residents to visit.
Historical Locations
The following are the most historic venues and user-created places in the SL universe. ).
Abbot’s Aerodome

The original concept behind the Aerodrome was a multi-level, art deco, futuristic airport that floats over the ruins of a fictitious abandoned airfield. If you visit the ground level, you can see a dilapidated, hangar and tower, and a couple of wrecked biplanes.
Today, it functions as some sort of “tourist attraction” where several flights hourly take residents up and give them a tour of the SL Mainland.
Cannabis Cathedral

The cannabis cathedral’s theme reflects the creator’s pro-marijuana beliefs. The venue showcases a huge dance floor with 2 stages including a waterfall that emptied into a pool and has dance platforms on both sides. The venue also features smoke rooms, a VIP lounge and a beautiful photo gallery. There was a time when the Cathedral held the highest dwell record.
On July 10, 2004, the cathedral had its final party and was decommissioned soon afterwards.
The Welcome Area

The welcome area is the starting point for all newbie residents in the Second Life universe. Currently, Second Life’s Welcome Area is situated in Ahern and Morris.
Due to the dynamic nature of real estate in the Second Life universe, it has been moved around a lot. Originally, the Welcome Area was in Natoma in 2002 then moved to an area called Ritch in 2003.
Currently, there are three Welcome Areas in SL. The main welcome Area in the aforementioned Ahern/Morris region, another in Lime/Plum and a newer one in the Waterhead region.
In 2004, Ahern/.Morris Welcome area was ceremoniously destroyed by linden labs to pave way for renovation.
The Shelter

The Shelter was built because of the growing concern that much of Second Life’s venues were all sexual in nature and a lot of veteran players are advertently taking advantage of new users.
The founders of the shelter decided to open a place which is friendly to both new and mature residents and had the intention of creating a “warm” atmosphere that wouldn’t turn off newbie users.
